Woody James was born James Woodruff on September 24, 1951 in Akron, Ohio. Growing up in Ravenna, Ohio, he started playing guitar at the age of 6. His musical career began at age 11 as a summer fill-in with Bobby and the Quantells performing mostly in Kent, Ohio. In the mid-60's, he co-founded the Yeoman with fellow partner Jerry Losh. Two years later, Woody joined the Motley Odds . While playing a Kent State University Fall Mixer, Woody and base player Bobby Sepulveda met local guitar celebrity Joe Walsh [Measles, The James Gang, Barnstorm, The Eagles]. Joe approached them about forming a new band which became the Measles . In the fall of 1970, Woody moved to England and fronted the British rock band Triad and played throughout England and Western Europe.

Upon returning from England, Woody started a laser manufacturing business and holds numerous patents in that field.

Woody has performed with the likes of Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Gilby Clarke (Guns ‘n Roses), Charlie Slade (ACDC), Elliot Eastman (The Cars), Joe Vitale (CSNY) and, of course, Joe Walsh (Measles, The James Gang, Barnstorm, The Eagles), to name a few.

Woody and partner Jeff Sefong formed Old School Effects with the intent of building boutique pedals, guitars and amplifiers.

Woody currently plays in the band OHIO, a CSNY Tribute Band (www.ohiocsny.com). OHIO headlined the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock Concert this past year. Last year, Woody released a solo CD titled Unfinished Business featuring all original material

When Jeff first started getting into rock music in the 60s, he really liked the sounds of the bands using the newer electronic effects: bands like The Yardbirds and The Rolling Stones. Later, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, The Doors and Robin Trower.

Jeff first wanted a Rangemaster guitar but could neither find nor afford one. Having attended vocational electronics school, Jeff acquired a Rangemaster schematic and built himself one from scrap parts.

He then began collecting pedals, schematics, and pictures of the guts of as many vintage pedals as possible. Jeff worked to find the pedals and parts that produced the tones of the classic fuzz circuits he had heard on the radio as a youth.
